Day 1 — Arrive Queenstown: Pick up your vehicle and check in with a simple lakefront orientation. Use the afternoon to recover from travel and prepare with groceries and essentials. Optional short lookout stops are suggested if daylight allows. Evening is relaxed for rest and early sleep.

Day 2 — Queenstown → Wanaka: Drive via scenic alpine roads with two to three planned pull-offs for photos and comfort breaks. Arrive in Wanaka with time for the lakeside promenade and café culture. Optional easy walks are included for families and first-time visitors. Sunset time is reserved for the most photogenic viewpoints.

Day 3 — Wanaka → Franz Josef (Haast Pass): Travel through Haast Pass with waterfall viewpoints, rainforest stops and safe roadside breaks. The drive is paced with buffers so you can enjoy the scenery without rushing. Arrive Franz Josef region and choose a gentle evening viewpoint or a relaxed town stroll. Notes include weather-aware alternatives if conditions shift.

Day 4 — Franz Josef flexible day: Keep the day open to match your style: scenic viewpoints and easy trails, or optional helicopter/glacier experiences. Time is built in for warm pools, relaxed dining and recovery. Your roadbook suggests the best time windows based on typical weather patterns. Evening is calm for rest before the next drive.

Day 5 — Franz Josef → Hokitika/Greymouth: Follow the coast with beach stops, small-town charm and photo points at the Tasman Sea. Arrive with enough time to explore local craft shops or walk the shoreline. The day is intentionally lighter to balance previous and upcoming drives. Enjoy a quiet evening with easy dining options.

Day 6 — West Coast → Lake Tekapo: Cross inland through dramatic landscape changes, scheduling comfort breaks and fuel stops. Arrive Tekapo for lakeside icons and turquoise views. Afternoon is unhurried with time for photography and gentle walks. Evening supports stargazing if skies are clear.

Day 7 — Tekapo → Queenstown: Enjoy a slow morning by the lake before returning toward Queenstown with scenic pauses. Arrive in time for a relaxed afternoon on the waterfront and optional short viewpoints. The itinerary keeps the evening open for dining or early rest. Buffers are included to avoid feeling rushed.

Day 8 — Milford Sound day trip: Drive the iconic Milford Road with curated stops at the most scenic points. Join your included Milford Sound cruise for fjords, waterfalls and wildlife spotting chances. Return to Queenstown with a meal stop and comfort breaks for safety. Final night is reserved for relaxation and packing.

Day 9 — Departure: Wrap up with a calm morning, coffee stop and last-minute shopping if desired. Return the vehicle with refuelling and paperwork buffers included. Optional final viewpoint is suggested based on flight timing. Depart with a complete West Coast + fjord South Island story.
